ท้องที่อำเภอช้างกลางเดิมเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของอำเภอฉวาง กระทรวงมหาดไทยได้ประกาศลงวันที่ 26 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2539 แบ่งพื้นที่การปกครองออกมาตั้งเป็น กิ่งอำเภอช้างกลาง โดยให้มีผลบังคับต้งแต่วันที่ 15 กรกฎาคม ปีเดียวกัน[1] และต่อมาในวันที่ 24 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2550 ได้มีพระราชกฤษฎีกายกฐานะขึ้นเป็น อำเภอช้างกลาง โดยมีผลบังคับตั้งแต่วันที่ 8 กันยายน ปีเดียวกัน
